What Is Relief Printmaking? A print-making technique using plank wood. The white areas are carved away with knives and gouges to create an image. The raised areas are inked and printed. This is referred to as a relief technique. A carved, contour drawing, painted with watercolors. After the paint dries, a damp paper is overlaid and passed through a printing press. The watercolor transfers to the damp paper and the carved lines emboss, creating a color print from a single block.
